Fall Back Safely This Year

Daylight Saving Time ends on November 7th and this signifies the change of our clocks, the end of warm fall sunshine, and a move toward shorter, colder days. While our bodies adjust to the loss of an hour of sunlight, we also find ourselves coming home from work in the dark. Shorter periods of sunlight in our days can result in additional mental and physical health concerns.

As we prepare for the upcoming rush of holidays and nestle in for the chilly winter months, it is important to be mindful of our surroundings. It’s an ideal time to consider what we can do to improve safety at home for those we love. One of those being to improve safety and prevent risks that could result in falls occurring.

Here are a few safety tips to prevent falls this fall:

1. Outdoor Lighting:  Make sure you have adequate lighting in your driveway, front porch, or walkway. Lack of lighting when navigating your steps to and from your front door increases your risk of falling.

2. Clean off your walkway: Now is the time to put away any pumpkins or fall planters that could get in the way when walking in the dark.

3. Keep moving: Physical activity decreases your likelihood of a fall. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Taking a walk during the day or working on your home exercise program are two great options.

4. When entering stores or restaurants, be cautions of wet floors and mats at the doors. Even the most coordinated amongst us can be prone to these hazards.
